Born in 1921, he received his MBA from Syracuse University in 1947, and then lived in Bombay for about 10 years before moving to Pakistan. Services free tax preparation by volunteers certified to families who earned up to $ 50,000 or less annually.
Residents of Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens and Traverse counties who earned up to $25,000 or families who earned up to $50,000 in 2010 are eligible for free tax preparation.
For the 2010 year, 647 households were served with $930,000 in refunds. For the 2011 tax season, the goal is 700 households and to exceed the $1 million amount.
Economic Opportunity is the theme of service for the 2012 federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s (MLK) life and legacy of helping neighbors and communities to promote his message of equality, social justice and opportunity.
During the current economic challenge facing U.S. citizens and because MLK Day of Service occurs near the tax season, VISTAs across the U.S. are encouraging participation in free tax preparation services.
Tax preparation is available to families and individuals by volunteers who are trained and certified in the current tax year’s laws, credits, refunds and software through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. E-filing services can seven to 14 days that, if you choose, can be placed on a pre-paid debit card.
